Matthew 5:1-5 Viva Jesus
Prayer- Lord, Open our hearts and open our minds and help us learn. Go-Fight-Win. Amen.
The Beatitudes
1Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them saying: 3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
The revolution begins. This is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus starts with what are now know as the beatitudes. Beatitude means blessing, and Jesus tells the crowds there(and here,) who are to be blessed.
Look deeper at verses 3-5. They seem to be contradictory. How can depressed people inherit the kingdom of heaven? And why will the meek inherit the earth? Haven’t we all heard they the strong survive and that if you want something bad enough-you take it? I like the line "I’m glad the meek will inherit the earth, then I can take it from them. What are they going to do? They're a bunch of meeks!"
Jesus is trying to get the people to see real faith, eternal faith. Faith that goes beyond this earth. Happy are the poor in spirit on this earth, because they have great rewards. Happy are the sad, for with sadness comes comfort. Happy are the followers, for they will follow to a new and greater world. That is revolutionary!
Prayer- Lord- help us to grasp real faith, eternal faith, the faith to follow you no matter what the rest of the world may think. Go-Fight-Win. Amen.
Viva Jesus!
