Warning Against False Teachers of the Law
3As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 4nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work—which is by faith. 5The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. 7They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.
8We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9We also know that law[
a] is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.
What are false teachers of law? Do they still exist today? Paul infers that false teachers are people who teach for the glory they can obtain, not for the true message. They hold up the law to help them increase their power and control. Do we have them today? Absolutely! The news is full of people who have let the power of faith corrupt their judgement. They either feel that they are above regular believers and the Word can not be presented without them, or they see a financial benefit to proclaiming Gods word.
Let me stress this, all professional religious workers and teachers aren’t false teachers, few are in comparison to the numbers of the profession. So, how can we tell who is genuine. Through prayer and examination. Do not take what I write as Gospel. Think about it, if there are things they do not work for you, discuss them. True teachers are not afraid of examination of their teaching, but rather they welcome it. It is through such examination that they become stronger and more confident in the truth.
Prayer- Lord, Let the readers of these words think about what is written, and be able to apply them to their own faith. Go-Fight-Win. Amen.
