A Bible study initially set up for alumni of the Senior Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church of Lufkin, Texas. 1 Timothy 3:8-13

Relax, Read and Reflect
Prayer- Lord, Open our hearts and open our minds and help us learn. Go-Fight-Win. Amen.

8Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
11In the same way, their wives[
a] are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.
12A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well. 13Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Deacon means "one who serves." These were people who were put in charge of the day to day operations of the early church. They had to feed the orphans and widows, visit the sick and imprisoned, and all the other jobs the early church. These were leaders, but not the overseers. Since these were the people that people saw day to day and the ones who touched lives, they also had to be of high moral character.
The deacons of today’s church are more like a group of trustees. They are in charge of the financial and physical campus, not as much in charge of the work of the church. Paul says they must be tested. I wonder how many of our modern deacons would pass? Probably most.
Prayer- Lord, help us remember that it is by our deeds and actions that people notice us as a church. Help us to live a life away from the church buildings that shows the world how You love all people, and how people should act. Go-Fight-Win. Amen.
