Alumni Bible Study

A Bible study initially set up for alumni of the Senior Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church of Lufkin, Texas. It is our hope and our prayer that this study touches the hearts of those who participate and helps spread the love and grace of Our Lord and God. All who want to learn more about God are welcome

Fasting
16"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Here we are in the middle of Lent, and we are learning how to fast. We do not fast much today, but in the world of Christ, the Jews were required to fast (no food) every year on the day of Atonement. Plus, the Pharisees fasted twice a week to show the people how holy they were.
Fasting is not easy. The holy people would sit and writhe in pain to show the rest of the folks what they were doing to be more holy. We may not fast much anymore, (although some do,) but we still know people who will tell you by word or deed how they are sacrificing to get close to God. By telling the world, they are now receiving their reward.
Jesus is not telling the people to stop fasting. He is telling us to do these things in communion with God, and no one else. Then, we will receive heavenly rewards.
Prayer- Lord, we want to be more Godly, we want to focus on you. Help us and be with us as we prepare. Go-Fight-Win. Amen.
Viva Jesus!
