An Eye for an Eye
38"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'[a] 39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
"Don’t get mad-Get even!" How many times have we heard this or something similar? God’s law in Leviticus 24:19 was to insure mercy. It was designed to make the punishment fit the crime. Somehow, it lost it’s meaning. Instead of promoting mercy it promoted vengeance.
If we are wronged, Jesus tells us to do good to those who wrong us. We should not keep score on who did what to us, we should love them. This is not easy to do, it is not natural. It is supernatural, it is radical, it is revolutionary. Isn’t this what Jesus calls us to be?
Prayer- Lord, Help us to forgive. Help us to show your love and mercy. Let’s face it, it is only through Your example and help that we could ever turn the other cheek. Go-Fight-Win. Amen.
